David Barton and the End of History

I just had the pleasure of recording a new episode of the podcast with new (and hopefully frequent) contributor Jay Eldred. Jay contacted me through the Facebook page and proposed an episode about the Evangelical, self-styled historian David Barton. What came of this idea was truly fascinating for me, and I hope that you find it equally educational.

Our conversation led us in, out, and around the subjects of Seven Mountain Dominionism, Christian Nationalism, and the vast reaches of the Christian Mediasphere - among many other things.  Why does a significant segment of American Christians believe the United States has divine origins? What is at stake in this ideology? And of course ethics. What are those?

The episode is now up and running and waiting for your feedback. Also, check out these links, which will give you a nice preview of the discussion:

Recording this episode was somewhat surreal.

I know we barely scratched the surface, so feel free to discuss what you think we got right, wrong, or of what you'd like to hear more.

Thanks for the great episode, guys. I'm really digging the show. I'm an Anabaptist, so the discussion about Christian nationalism was enormously interesting to me. Glad to hear the two of you are planning to collaborate some more. I'm a fan.

I really enjoyed this piece, gentlemen, thank you. I grew up with the same kind of revisionist, fundamentalist perception of American history. I find it as troubling as you do, and in particular the ways in which this kind of exceptionalism shuts down any self-critique of our society, and even stunts empathy towards others. I'm not an Anabaptist, but I secretly want to be...

Hmm. I have a friend who is from an Anabaptist background maybe I could bring him into this...
